Forget About the Exercise, Enjoy the FUN

What's the biggest problem with exercise? Some would say it is boring. Others might add that it's exhausting. What would happen if the person exercising "forgot" about the fatigue and wasn't bored?

New Proof About Obesity's Effects

For several years, medical experts have predicted that childhood obesity would cause the current generation of children to live shorter lives than those of their parents. Up until recently, this prediction of premature death had been based on anecdotal evidence rather than verifiable research. This speculation became "fact" with the publication of an article in the February 2010 issue of the "New England Journal of Medicine."

Rehabilitation of Stroke with Active Gaming

Survivors of strokes say that there is no more helpless feeling. Strokes are caused by either blood clots or ruptured blood vessels which lead to hemorrhaging which disrupt blood supply to a portion of the brain. As oxygen and other nutrients that are critical to the functioning of the brain are stopped, brain cells die and the stroke victim can suffer paralysis, lose ability to understand or form speech, have vision difficulties or lose parts of their memory.

Foods That Can Boost Your Workout

Since the time when you were sitting in that high chair, dodging a spoonful of that nasty looking pureed peas and carrots, you've probably had someone tell you that it takes the right kind of food to make you big and strong. Well, your Momma was right - as usual.

Video Games Affect the Way We Think

It starts innocently enough. The menacing bad guys, who are armed to the teeth, meet their demise at the hand of a 12-year old kid with a videogame controller. This epic fight of good versus evil leads to more video challenges, including virtual football, basketball, baseball and any number of other video sports games.

Memphis 'N Motion

From the first time I heard Al Green sing "Let's Stay Together," I knew that I'd like the city of Memphis. I've always been charmed by the history, the blues, the ribs, the river and the genteel citizens. So, it seems appropriate that on the Saturday before the biggest feast day of the year, we got several hundred new friends together and put Memphis 'N Motion.

Building Strong Brains and Bodies

I'm a word guy. If I see a word that I don't know the meaning of, I immediately grab a dictionary or go to Google and find out what it means. Then...I hate to admit this...I show off by using it a few times. I know. I have issues about words. Putting aside my intellectual insecurity which is wrapped in erudition, one of my current word faves is "counterintuitive."

Ah, to Sleep. Perchance to Lose Weight

With apologies to Shakespeare, this week's posting is something that I hold sacred. Sleep. It is the nectar of the god's. If I didn't have this blog due in about 15 minutes, do you know what I'd be doing? That's right Bunkie, I'd be taking a well-deserved, leisurely nap on my handy office couch.

Happy New Gear!

The holiday season seems to make that recessive shopping gene dominant. Otherwise sane, normal people get that "Oh my gosh, I've forgotten to buy uncle Ferd something and now I'm a terrible person" look on their faces. I believe this is because the media make buying gifts the most important part of the season.

GameBikes on Patrol

I've always thought that being a bike policeman was one of the coolest jobs on earth. Just think about it. You're on a high tech bike eight hours a day which means that you are in great shape. You get to know the people in the neighborhoods where you patrol because you're cruisin' along on a bike rather than a car and this encourages folks who live and work there to yak it up with you. Plus, when you need to apprehend some scum-bag perp (sorry...too much "Law 'n Order" and reruns of "Hill Street Blues" for me) you can move faster than an officer on foot and go into areas that are too small for a car.
